Docklands Firelight Festival - Fireworks

Updated: Feb 8, 2020

It was a busy weekend as I headed out to the Docklands for the Firelight Festival on Friday and Saturday night. City of Melbourne’s new festival, Docklands Firelight takes the traditions of the winter solstice to a new level. Creative Director Gill Minervini (Dark Mofo Winter Feast, Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras) has pulled together a modern celebration of arts, music, food, fire and fun. It is a three day all ages celebration of winter. Giant wooden sculptures by artist Christian Patton were set alight each night with a choreographed fireworks display as the backdrop. Visitors warmed up alongside the fire drums and feast on smoked and barbequed foods. Roving performers including fire breathers, dancers, drummers and musicians, all added to the festive and fiery atmosphere.

I had the pleasure of shooting the fireworks at two locations, on Friday from NewQuay Promenade directly in front and on Saturday from the top of the Melbourne Star. Friday 30 June to Sunday 2 July, 5pm-9pm NewQuay Promenade
